Wedding Ceremony Traditions — Which is Right for You?

There are many different wedding ceremony traditions which encompass many cultures, customs and belief systems. Choosing which traditions you want to include in your wedding may be easy for you, or it may be more difficult. If you belong to a particular religious group you may already know exactly how you want your wedding to be. For example, the average Christian wedding is a predictable affair for many which includes various prayers, vows and speeches to be given. Catholic and Jewish weddings are also traditional in that there are certain words to be spoken and customs to be adhered to. But what can you do if you’re not religious or are in a mixed religion relationship?

In these cases, you can take the traditions from various customs that you like the best and leave the rest. For example, the lighting of the unity candle is a traditional part of a Christian wedding that you may want to use even if you are not having a Christian ceremony. One alternative to the unity candle that many couples are using is called the sand ceremony. Rather than lighting a candle, the bride and groom pour sand from two individual containers into one container. The sand mixes together and represents the joining of husband and wife, much in the way that two flames join together on the unity candle to make one.

There are other traditions that you may want to forgo or include depending on your preferences. One is the tradition of the bride wearing white. Brides who have been married before, or brides who are of a certain age may not want to wear white. They may choose to wear another color like blush, ivory, periwinkle, cream, pink, peach or another muted tone that they like. While the tradition of wearing white is thought to represent a bride’s purity, the tradition actually started in 1499 as a way to ward off evil spirits and was first practiced by Anne of Brittany when she married Louis XII.

Whether or not you include wedding ceremony traditions in your service or make your own new traditions is up to you. Different ethnicities have different traditions that you may want to take into account as well. For example, the traditional wedding ceremony for a Japanese couple is going to be very different from the traditional wedding ceremony for a Irish couple. If you are not sure about the traditions that are appropriate for you, speak to elders in your family or do your own research on the subject.
