The Smell of Bad Breath

Known by many as halitosis, bad breath is a common condition that affects millions of people from different walks of life. It is deemed as nothing fatal, but bad breath can be a cause of embarrassment for many. It may even lower the person’s self-esteem, and if not treated as early as possible, it has the tendency to become chronic, then affecting not only your career, but your entire life as well.

Bad breath problem is apparently identified by its smell. The smell of bad breath is commonly known to be distinctive, unpleasant and offensive. If you are affected by this condition, you might notice someone or your friends backing off from you or covering their nose every time you utter a word. Or, maybe someone had frankly told you before that you have bad breath.

Well, many people aren’t aware of the smell of their own breath. Many have even tried to deny when someone told them that they have bad breath. And, in an attempt to determine the smell of bad breath, many people tried to cup their hands between their mouth and nose. Unfortunately, you cannot easily tell if your breath smells bad simply because you become accustomed to your own odors.

The option is not just limited there. The smell of bad breath can be more accurately identified by the use of a device known as halimeter. Dentists often use this device. The patient who wishes to know the smell of bad breath is simply asked to blow into a straw like tube that is attached to the halimeter. The machine then measures the amount of volatile sulfur compounds in the breath. The more sulfur volatile compounds are found, the more disgusting the breath smells.

Now, it is important to note that seeing a dentist is not only best if you want to know the smell of bad breath. Every people need to see a dentist not for that purpose alone, but for proper dental care. A dental check up is also highly needed as there are some instances when the smell of bad breath is caused by a more serious health condition. For example, many reports have revealed that a fruity smell of bad breath may signal ketoacidosis, which may occur in diabetes and is a potentially life-threatening condition. Aside from that, a fecal smell of bad breath may signal bowel obstruction, which is but another unfavorable condition. And, much to your surprise, people who are affected by a chronic kidney failure may have an ammonia-like breath odor.

Given all those facts, the key to determining the smell of bad breath and maintaining good health is to see an expert. That’s basically the best thing that you can do not only to prevent or treat you bad breath, but to promote good health and well-being.
