Snorkeling In Galapagos

Known as the “living laboratory of evolution”, this archipelago is made up of 13 main volcanic islands, 6 smaller islands and 107 rocky islets. Galapagos Island was believed to be the first to have been formed due to a continental drift that happened 5 to 10 million years ago. It is famous for its vast number of endemic species and studies conducted by Charles Darwin which led to his postulated theory of development by natural selection.

Blessed by a bountiful fauna wildlife thriving in their rich aquatic formations, snorkeling in Galapagos will always be a delight to any water enthusiast. Here are three of the main islands in this archipelagic location that you should not miss hopping into.
* Floreana Island
The sixth- largest in area, Floreana has three northern coast visitor sites for a superb experience of snorkeling in Galapagos. First is Post Office Bay which is just a small beach but has white sands. It has a makeshift barrel adorned with a rustic yet international decoration. Located nearby are remains of a canning factory, lava tunnel, swimming pool and soccer field. Second stop is Punta Cormorant, this is bay is on a brown sand bed which is tinted green due to its composition of olivine crystals. It is inhabited by sea lions and crabs where with just how many meters walk, it will take you to a promenade overlooking a flamingo lagoon. Lastly, the Devil’s Crown which is the remains of a half- submerged volcanic cone. Upon entering the water on the outside of the rocky crater, there are many white- tipped reef sharks, turtles and rays that can be commonly seen.

* Genovesa Island
This may not be always part of the 8- day cruise itinerary but Genovesa should be visited if you want to have a grand moment of snorkeling in Galapagos. It has two main tourist destinations namely Darwin Bay and
Prince Phillip Steps. Darwin Bay has a .75 kilometer trail pass towards the mangrove patches that is frequented by land birds as well as exotic species such as nazca boobies and swallow- tailed gulls. As you go further, playful sea lions are at sight. In Prince Phillip Steps, as you trek for one kilometer, it will lead you inland through Palo Santo vegetation. It is a nest for colonies of seabirds and short- eared owls. It is also home to the island’s endemic doves and swallows.

* San Cristobal Island
Lying on the extreme southeast coast, San Cristobal boasts of its only freshwater lagoon and captivating beaches where it is truly a haven for snorkeling in Galapagos. It provides an interesting socio- environmental element that is not found in the other islands. It has a gallery of colonial architecture and organic coffee plantations. You can also get involved in local politics in the provincial capital of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. Tourists can reach the place by an airplane from Baltra or by boat from Puerto Ayora.
