Curacao Airport

The Curacao airport is Curacao’s gateway to the world. Before the airport was opened for international flights, travelers from all over the world would have to get a connecting flight from other nearby international airports before they get to Curacao (other travelers would have to catch a ferry from Aruba and Bonaire in order to get to Curacao).

The Curacao Airport (Hato International Airport), which is in Plaza Margareth Abraham, is located near the island capital, Willemstad. At present, Curacao airport has regular flights to and from all over the world. There are regular nonstop flights from different locations and airlines. There are two top airline companies from North America that serve Curacao; these are the Dutch Caribbean Airlines and the Air Jamaica.

Like any airports, the Curacao Airport is tightening its security after the recent terror attack all over the world (especially after the 9-11 tragedy). Airline security has tightened checkpoints and conducted additional regulations with regards to cargo and luggage. In the Hato International Airport, travelers are often stopped for random inspections and must present themselves and their luggage. This is one of the security measures that the airport has increased which causes an increase amount of travel time. Travelers are advised to observe these new regulations for their own safety.

Here are some tips on how to speed up their process:

1. Check in at least two hours before departure time.

2. When passing through a security checkpoint, have your identification (government issued) ready.

3. Dress for a flight. If you set off a highly sensitive detector, it might mean there will be a more detailed search. Avoid wearing steel-toed shoes and metal belts. If you have a surgical implant, obtain a note from your doctor stating so (it will shorten the discussion with the airport security.).

4. Pack wisely. If you have food and drinks with you, it’s best that you put them in your carry-on luggage some edible items set off bomb detectors. Avoid carrying wrapped presents with you, it look suspicious to the airport security.

An association of airport partners of Curacao, more known as “Curacao Airport Partners” led by the company “Alterra Curacao Holdings, started a thirty year agreement last August 1, 2003 to operate and develop the Curacao International Airport. This includes the construction of a new terminal that would be able to handle 2.5 million passengers annually. The terminal is expected to be completed in May or June of 2006.
