Christmas Lights

I am a Christmas fanatic. Each year as the holidays approach I tell myself that this year I will check through all of my Christmas storage prior to making any new purchases. But then I will be out shopping and will see a pre-season sale and cannot pass up the bargain. It seems that each year the Christmas merchandise hits the shelves earlier. Last year on Labor Day weekend when I was searching through the school supply aisle I noticed that the Christmas lights were displayed in the next aisle. It seems that the same day that the Halloween Candy goes on clearance is the same day that the Christmas candy goes on the shelves.

Last year I did not pass up the pre-season Christmas lights. They were a very good deal and I could not remember if the Christmas lights from the year before worked or not. Of course when I did take decorations out of storage I found that I had purchased new Christmas lights at a clearance sale at the end of the previous season. My husband often reminds me that I need to check what I have prior to buying more because we are running out of storage space. Last year I was glad that I had the extra Christmas lights because the old strand was burned out. We did not even try to locate why the strand did not light we simply used all the new ones. I told my husband that we should buy new lights each year and donate the old ones to the school. Each year the school is looking for lights to use at dances, proms and plays. By donating the lights they will go to a good cause and we do not have to store them and then try to untangle them each year. It is so much easier to decorate with new lights because they are not tangled and they all light.

The Christmas lights that we use outdoors are more expensive so we put in more effort in packing them so that they do not tangle. This is not always easy because the weather is usually bitterly cold when we put the outdoor lights away. My husband cannot tolerate having the lights stay on the house once the holiday season is over. He will never be one of the home owners that leave the holiday lights on the house year round. He enjoys looking at light displays and he enjoys decorating our home and yard, but after News Years Day he insists that the decorations go back into storage.

I am going to try to resists the sales this year until I go through the storage area. I know that we did donate the Christmas lights that we used last year, but I do not remember if I bought more at the end of the season sales.

Artificial Christmas Trees Are Taking Over the Holiday Season
In days of old, the holiday season was filled with the smells of roasted turkey, pumpkin pie and pine trees.  Today, sadly, many homes only get the “fresh” smell of a Christmas pine tree when someone is burning a pine-scented candle. It isn’t any secret that the artificial trees are becoming more and more “lifelike” than every before.  Artificial Christmas Trees in the past were stiff, uncompromising and did not arrive with lights already strung.  For many, the idea of setting up an artificial tree, stringing the lights and dealing with storage wasn’t that far off from traveling to purchase a natural tree, stringing the lights and disposing of the dried tree at the end of the holiday season. Using a natural tree provided that fresh holiday pine scent and for a little extra money and effort each year, it Christmas Lights was worth buying fresh for many people.

Christmas Storage
... our bedroom due to the steep pitch of our roof. This area is about 30 feet long and 3 feet wide. We found large plastic bins to use for Christmas storage. The bins come in a variety of shapes, sizes and with varied features. The attic area gets very warm in the summer and cold in the winter so the things that are stored there cannot be affected by heat. I have found that on some ornaments that have glitter and other embellishments glued on them the glue may harden as a result of the temperature fluxes. For this reason the Christmas storage that I choose for the tree decorations are flat plastic boxes that can be slid under the bed in the spare bedrooms. For other items, like my village pieces...

Christmas Decorations
Christmas decorations I have accumulated. This is also fun because we put one tree in the living room in front of the bay window so that you can see it from the outside as well as inside. The second tree we put in our bedroom. I love falling asleep with the lights on the tree and the decorations sparkling Christmas Lights in the lights. By having two trees I place the formal ornaments on the living room tree and place the homemade and whimsical ornaments on the upstairs tree. Having two trees is extra work, but it is worth the effort. I also place a small artificial tree with miniature ornaments in the guest bathroom. Ornaments are not the only Christmas decorations I have accumulated. I also have a snowman village as well as a winter scene village. I put out the village displays the day after Thanksgiving and leave them out until the...

Christmas
Grinch, as well as Miracle on 34th Street and It's A Wonderful Life, all hold a special place in our hearts. Some of us may travel across the country during Christmas time, while others of us may simply travel across the street. No matter what our Christmas traditions are, there is one very strong connection that we all share. Recent events in our country's history, [9-11, Hurricane Katrina], remind us all of this connection and continue to strengthen that bond every day. This time of year we gather together with friends and family. As we gather, some of Christmas Lights us may celebrate the birth of Christ, some of us may light candles on a Menorah, some of us may simply unwrap gifts with glee without a second thought. Yet there is no doubt, no question, that we all gather to celebrate each other. We gather to celebrate...

Landscaping Lights
... cords and wires. We have two dogs that like to chase chipmunks and squirrels and Christmas Lights we were concerned that they would get tangled in wires and electrical cords. The solar landscaping lights have a battery that is charged by sun light. The lights come on automatically at dusk and stay lit for several hours. We liked the idea that the lighting would not cost additional money on our electric bill. Each solar light has its own battery cell, so they do not have to be placed a certain distance from each other. With the electrical lights you can only space them as far apart as the length of the cord. We purchased eight solar lights that were shaped like small coach lights. They were made of copper...

Christmas Is Not Just About Toys
... needed to include practical items as gifts. This meant that stocking stuffers usually included socks and underwear instead of luxury items. We also bought other clothing items for the children. Most of the toys for Christmas that our children received were from their grandparents. This worked out well because it gave the children something to do during the holiday time that was spent at the grandparent’s houses. Now that we are the grandparents and have more financial resources we are the ones that get to shop for and provide the toys for Christmas. I have to admit that the toys have changed greatly since our children were young. Everything is either electronic or battery operated. This year when my husband and I went to find gifts for our children and their families...

Add Dramatic Patio Lights
Patio lights are available for every garden situation. Downlighting and backlighting Christmas Lights are just two techniques that create dramatic effects while, of course, providing light. Each technique may be used to create a virtual work of art when a lacy-leaved tree is highlighted. This works in winter as well, with deciduous trees with interesting branch formations. If you're unfamiliar with this type of lighting, go to Google's image database and type in 'garden backlighting' and 'garden downlighting' for examples of the lovely effects of this type of garden lighting. Popular Christmas Gifts
... from a desperate attempt to save money. We would each draw one name from a hat, and then we would only be obligated to buy that particular person a Christmas gift. Sounds cool, right? Well, as simple as it sounds, I had to get my aunt's name, who I hardly even know. What in the world was I going to get her? What were some popular Christmas gifts that would surely hit the spot? I didn't want to be one of those cheese balls with a festive sweater that would go straight to the garbage. My first plan was to ask my wife. What do women in their late 50s want? My wife was of course only 35 and had no idea. Strike one! I then hopped on the Internet in search of popular Christmas gifts for women. This was a great idea. Online there were a variety of reviews to offer me some guidance. After some intensive surfing through cyberspace, I had narrowed down my selection of gifts. It...

Online Greeting Cards
... bad things you can say about online greeting cards. I love to send cards out to those I love, but that does not mean I always get around to it time. A perfect example is that I have all of my Christmas cards still sitting on my table. That wouldn’t be remarkable except for the fact that it is now the middle of January. However, my friends know that if they get a Christmas card from me before Christmas that something may be very, very wrong. When someone you know is sad, or perhaps having a very hard time, you most definitely want to send them a greeting card to the mail. Low Voltage Landscape Light
... order to work properly. The solar lights worked but they were relatively dim. They really did not provide adequate illumination for the area and we needed it. The secluded street has no streetlights and it can be very difficult to navigate through certain areas of the yard without outdoor lighting. The solar lights came in handy for a neighbor who lives on the top of a hill. His yard boasts stone pathways that beg for night lights but no large trees. The solar lights worked well in his sunny area but shady places require low voltage landscape lighting. Fortunately, he happened upon a great deal on the solar lights at Christmas Lights our neighborhood garage sale. We installed the low voltage landscape lighting and we were amazed by the difference. This outdoor illumination was worth the work and the whole learning experience may...

Tactical Lights
Imagine you were stranded somewhere in the dead of winter, because your car broke down, and you lacked a cell phone, emergency blankets, and even a lighter or some matches. This situation could get pretty hairy. It certainly wouldn't be the first time it's occurred. This is why at a young age, my father always told me to pack emergency supplies in my vehicle. These consist of a heavy blanket, snow boots, gloves, a few tactical lights, matches, and a couple MRE packs. If you're not hip with the MRE lingo, it stands for meals ready to eat. Military folks know all about them. Naturally you shouldn't have to use these supplies on a regular basis, or even once a Christmas Lights year. Hopefully you won't need them at all. They're in your vehicle just in case. On the other hand, you may...

Gifts for Kids
... that kids like more than presents and kids parties. I remember the gifts for kids that my mom used to get us around Christmas time. My Christmas presents were out of this world. They were the kind of things that really made me drool while exciting my imagination and making me learn. My parents were no fools. They knew how to get the perfect gifts for children. At the same time, they would entertain us and stimulate us. My favorite gifts for kids when I was young were technology gifts. I loved anything that had to do with high-tech. My parents bought me a radio controlled car kit one year. They decide not to buy me a radio control car, Christmas Lights because they wanted me to learn from putting one together. At first I was a little disappointed… ” Gifts For Kids - Inspire them to care about the world “...
