Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation aims to help heart patients attain a better physical and mental health and to prevent the onset of another cardiac event.

Heart disease is one of the leading killers in the U.S. as well as in other parts of the world. It has been viewed as the “traitor disease” because it does not flash warning signs. Most individuals who have had cardiac events did not see it coming. Unlike other serious diseases where there are evident symptoms, heart disease does not manifest any. Thus, patients are mostly caught off guard and had no time to prepare for it.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a medical program that helps patients deal with the aftermath of a heart disease. It aims to assist patients to a fast recovery and help them achieve the levels of physical and mental health closest to the ones before the cardiac event. Cardiac rehabilitation also has the goal to maintain, if not improve, the patient’s present heart condition and to prevent the onset of another cardiac arrest.

Cardiac rehabilitation program encompasses several things:

* Patient counseling to make him fully understand his condition and be able to manage the cardiac rehabilitation process.
* Implementing an exercise program.
* Helping the patient make lifestyle changes to reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking, and physical inactivity. Proper diet and exercise should also be incorporated in the cardiac rehabilitation program to decrease the chances of recurring cardiac events.
* Giving vocational assistance so that the patient may be able to go back to work or find work and be able to live a normal life again.
* Giving patients the information on his real health condition including any limitations.
* Extending emotional support to the patient.

Cardiac rehabilitation, if supervised by a doctor, can be most effective and helpful to patients with congestive heart failure, recent heart attack, coronary artery bypass, pacemaker implants, or those experiencing chest pains due to clogged heart arteries. Cardiac rehabilitation mostly includes an exercise program, but it is tailored to suit the specific needs of a patient with regards to his health condition. These exercises may or many not be closely monitored, depending on the heart problem of the patient and the presence of other health diseases as well.

The aspects of cardiac rehabilitation if properly administered will have a great impact on the patient’s fast recovery, improved functioning, and the quality of life. Cardiac rehabilitation however, also needs the patient’s sincere commitment to the program so that risk factors may be reduced. Through this, the patient can look forward to a sense of well-being and gain a positive outlook of life in general.
