Fiji, one of the fascinating spots in the Pacific is gifted with natural beauty. You can feast your eyes and bodies with the beautiful beaches, relax your mind and spirit with the warm breeze and serene surrounding, and attain a peaceful moment of time. Blessed with good land and water resources, Fiji is also fortunate to have these resources filled with beautiful creatures. The animals in Fiji abound, yet with the changes and environmental situations happening in the past decades and in the recent years, these unique creatures have slowly been deprived of their wonderful habitats and lives.
There are land and water animals in Fiji that one would find useful and beautiful. Inhabiting the lands of the islands are the pigs, goats, cattle, etc., and enjoying the underwater life are the eels, sharks, fishes, anemones, shrimps, etc. However, it is sad to note that many of the wild species of animals in Fiji have slowly been disappearing, and it would truly be a pity if one day, these creatures will finally perish the lands and waters of Fiji. Wouldn’t it be distressing for future generations to just know the animals in Fiji through pictures and books? Wouldn’t it be unfair for them if they can’t see these wonderful creatures roaming their lands and waters?
This is why the concerned individuals, groups, and organizations in Fiji have planned and implemented ways on how to preserve these animals. The Fijian themselves wouldn’t feel good to say goodbye to these God-given blessings. For almost 50 years now, they have categorized the animals in Fiji into distinct groups and categories based on certain criteria to ensure that they can focus on which species or animal groups need to concentrate and act on. The animals in Fiji may belong to any of these groups: the Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), and Vulnerable (V). Animals belonging to the CR category are those that face extremely high risks of extinction, the animals in the EN category are those that face very high risk of extinction, and the animals in the V category are those that face a high risk of extinction but not as critical as the other two categories. These animals were classified based on some factors observed and studies conducted, like a reduction in the animals’ population, a decline in the extent of the animals’ occurrence in the area, and a probability of extinction in the next couple of years or so.
This just shows us that even with the abundance of life in a certain area, if not properly cared, preserved, and nurtured, a point will come when one can only regret how the future can no longer enjoy and appreciate the beauty and wonder this generation has experienced.
